Arty Party

One of the key points on our salon's Mission Statement is, "to warmly welcome everyone to an environment rich with music, art, and design." Our team consists of artists and art-lovers; from our hair stylists to our guest services team, and even to our behind-the-scenes staff, each and every one of us is compelled to create in some way!

For this month's edition of Hedkandi Loves Local, we invite you to reflect on our creative work with PARKLUXE, visit the coolest gallery and shop you need to know in Calgary's East Village, and introduce you to a human services organization that uses art as a means to build employment skills for marginalized populations!

ART + CULTURE

Five Art & Merchandise is a gallery, shop & studio committed to finding unconventional methods of bringing contemporary art and creativity into people's lives. With each exhibition that Five AM hosts in the gallery, they release limited edition merchandise designed by the exhibiting artist. This merchandise is available both online and in the physical shop beside the gallery space. They also collect and offer carefully selected brands, publications, and art made in and out of the studio.

For their next show, they asked 36 artists to pair up and create portraits of one another. In the words of Five AM's founder Julia Kansas, "it's going to be pretty freaking fun." The group exhibition launches this Friday October 20 and the opening soirée runs from 7 to 10 p.m. with snacks from Peasant Cheeses and drinks available from Village Brewery. It will be on view at the gallery until November 5. Full artist details on Facebook here.

COMMUNITY

Our Hedkandi Salon/Butter team with the piece we created in conjunction with Prospect Human Services.

Our Hedkandi Salon/Butter team with the piece we created in conjunction with Prospect Human Services.

On October 30, we volunteered with Prospect Human Services' clients on an art project that they designed specifically for us!

The goal is to provide employability skills for people who face barriers to employment. Their clients include recent immigrants and refugees, military veterans, or people with disabilities or mental health barriers. They do this by opening the minds of employers (like us) to show what their clients are capable of, and by providing their clients with opportunities to grow and showcase their skills!
